Dragon Wytch Arc Winners

A) Surprise! I managed to scare up a second ARC of Dragon Wytch so two people are getting copies.

B) Double Surprise--since so many of you are nuts about Smoky, I've decided to give away one poster of Smoky.

All entries from my MySpace page, my LiveJournal, and my Blogger were eligible for the arcs and poster. Here are the winners:

From MySpace:

ARC 1: Judi aka Sidhe Vicious
ARC 2: Talin of Mordred

From Live Journal:

Poster winner: Eilisflynn

I'll message all three of you (on the respective sites). You have ONE WEEK to get me your address via the email address I give you. If you don't send me your information by midnight 4.19.08, I'll pick an alternative winner. :)

I wish I could send everybody something, but I'm just touched that all of you want so much to read this book. Know that I'm very proud of Dragon Wytch--and I hope you all love it when it comes out.

Yasmine (and I'm outta here for the night, in a few minutes)

Sisters of the Moon Novella

WOOHOO!!!

Okay, my editor told me I can make the official announcement now. I’m thrilled to say that I’ll be for an anthology for Berkley, along with authors Marjorie Liu, Eileen Wilks, and Karen Chance.

I’ll be writing a novella that explores the story of when Camille first met Trillian, along with the ritual that bound them together. So you’ll be getting a chance to see the girls at work for the OIA in Otherworld, before they ever came Earthside. Inked will be out January 10th, 2009, the week after Night Huntress hits the stands, so save your pennies, people. ~grins~

(By the way, I’m just having a major realization that Morio has got to be one of the hottest heroes/anti-heroes (besides Smoky) that I’ve ever written…I dunno why that just hit me today, but it did).

I won’t be writing another blog until Sunday, unless something way cool more happens, and I’ll announce the winner of the ARC contest then.

Dragon Wytch Arc Contest

I'm sorry I only have one copy to give away (there's another in the JDRF basket that's up for auction). But authors don't get a say in how many ARCs we do get.

So here's the deal: I'll be collecting entries from MySpace, from Blogger, and from LJ. Please, be honest and only one entry per person for the entire contest. Rules are as follows:

Tell me: Why do you want the ARC? I want to know. Do you just love the series, is it because of Smoky and Camille? Or are you a collector? And have you read the first three books? Because I think you really need to, to fully get the story from now on. The series is starting to grow and evolve in exponential ways now.

You don't have to go into major detail. No five page essays, please, or even ten paragraph entries. Just a simple "I want the ARC because…."

If you win you must promise me that you will not sell it, you won’t post any parts of it and/or any major spoilers on line, and that you are over 18 (especially for this one), and be willing to give me via PM (don't do it now—only if you win) your name and address. YOU are responsible for checking in to see if you've won. I'll post the winning name and the venue in which the winner entered on the blog, but you need to contact me within one week of my posting or I'll choose another winner.

My non-U.S. readers are welcome to enter.

If you don't like it, send it back to me and I'll mail you the return postage. That way I can give it to someone who really wants and will like it.

Contest is open from the time this goes up until midnight PDT on April 12th. Please, only entries in this thread. I'm going to post a chat thread right after (it will be post-dated, though, to tomorrow, to give this a complete entry spot of its own) so if you have other things you want to just chat about or tell me—feel free to just say hi in chat thread. In fact, I may start doing that once a week.

Bright Blessings,Yasmine

More Foreign Rights, ARCs of Dragon Wytch, Kitties, and the JDRF

First: My editor loved Night Huntress and we're good to go. No revisions on it-amazing. Well, technically, Dragon Wytch didn't have revision notes either, but I wanted to add a couple small scenes to it. But this time...no editorial revisions needed at all-I can do the tightening I usually do, during copyedits. It's kind of scary. I'm a tweaker. This is one less chance to tweak...but then again-it's more time to work on Demon Mistress. ~smiles~

Second: We've sold the French rights to
Witchling & Changeling! How do you say wahoo in French? So that will be English, French, and German. I'm hoping for a next, because it just seems so incredibly cool to have my work translated into other languages.

Third: I will be including an ARC of
Dragon Wytch in the Juvenile Diabetes Basket up for auction. You can see the picture of the basket in my last blog post. The value will be around $230 and I'd love to see this basket bring in a bundle for the JDRF, which is why I'm including some lovely things in it.

Fourth: I only have a very few ARCs of
Dragon Wytch, so will be giving away ONE other copy in a contest that combines entries from MySpace, Live Journal, and Blogger. That contest post will go up on all three sites in a few days. Remember: if you enter and win, you have to promise me you won't sell it or put it online or give away major spoilers. And it will be your responsibility to check in and see who won-the winner and venue they entered from will be posted at the end of the contest. Only one entry per person for the entire contest.

Fifth: I was asked if I could give some recommendations to Pagan-information sites on line. I don't do that anymore, since there are so many different boards and versions and frankly, I don't think people should limit themselves to one source of information and I'm not comfortable with most of the boards out there for various reasons. I do have a recommended reading list (and yes, it includes my nonfiction books) for magical study and you can find that here: Recommended Magical Bookshelf.

Next, to our kitties: Above is a picture of Keeter (Pakhit is her full name), our almost 18-year old girl...the one who is in chronic renal failure. We're having to give her sub-q fluids, for those who've been following her progress over the past year or so-and we're learning how. This is a hard road to walk with her. We love her so much and I find myself breaking into tears without warning, because I know she hasn't got a long, long time left with us. But we'll do what's right and when it's time to walk her over the Bridge and hand her back to the Lady Bast, we will help her go gently. We have friends who've managed to keep their kitties happy and comfortable for a couple years on S-Q fluids. This is my hope, but not my expectation. I don't know just how long she has, but we'll make her happy for as long as that is.

The other kitties are fine, by the way-Luna's birthday is on April 6th, she'll be 15. Meerclar will be 15 on June 20th. Tara's hitting 20 this year-not sure just when but I'm just counting around April because we got her in April of 1993 and she was five then.

And lastly...I said I'd write more about the JDRF auction today. You can see a larger picture of my basket on my site HERE. The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation supports the research and treatment of Type 1 diabetes. Brenda Novak, a bestselling romance author I am acquainted with is chairing a major fundraiser/on-line auction for this foundation and this will be the fourth year I'll be donating a basket.

Why Am I Involved?

Because diabetes is one of the fastest growing diseases today. Because it's a devastating disease. And because it touches my family personally. My husband has Type 1 diabetes, so I know on a very detailed level what strains this disorder puts on the body. While some cases of Type 2 diabetes can be controlled via diet and exercise, juvenile--or Type 1--diabetes is a different matter.

I watch Samwise try to calculate his insulin needs three-four times a day, every single day of his life, and there's no clear formula--everything alters your need for insulin, from working out to not eating enough to eating too much to not enough sleep...so there's a constant balancing act going on trying to reproduce what the body should be doing naturally. I've pulled him out of seizures at night, a few too many times to ever sleep well. I've learned more than I ever wanted to learn about the delicate balance in a diabetic's life between working out, diet, sleep, and stress.

About Type 1 Diabetes

Juvenile diabetes, also known as Type 1 diabetes, is an especially rough condition to cope with. There's no real knowledge of how it begins, though it's thought a virus may be the culprit. Those who have it--including my husband--must rely on several shots of insulin throughout the day to stay alive.

Typically, type 1 is developed before the age of 20, although some people (like Samwise) come to it late--he developed it when he was 27. In some cases, babies are born with it.

What is Insulin?

Insulin is a hormone secreted by the islets of Langerhans in the pancreas. Insulin is responsible for regulating the blood glucose levels. When insulin levels are reduced, the body cannot utilize nutrients from food and an undiagnosed Type 1 diabetic will starve to death if left untreated. The lack of insulin causes the blood sugar to soar out of control and prevents the body from absorbing nutrients out of the food, which is why people who contract diabetes show drastic weight loss when they haven't been dieting.

In addition, the inability of the body to produce insulin can cause blindness, neuropathy, gangrene, and a host of horrible problems.

Can Type 1 Diabetes Be Reversed or Cured?

Type 1 diabetes, unlike some cases Type 2 diabetes, cannot be reversed or cured at this time. This is a serious condition that debilitates so many people, and we need to find out why it happens, and how to prevent it, and with a little luck--how to cure it, or at least make it more livable.

Potentials For Better Lives

There are research trials going on right now that could make life so much more bearable. They're testing the injection of insulin cells into the pancreas. Once every six months or so, the diabetic would get a shot...while the cells would slowly die off (because Type 1 is an autoimmune reaction of the body and often leads--as in my husband's case--to autoimmune disorders like the thyroid quitting, and in some people, the adrenal glands shutting down), they would do so over a period of about six months, meaning the diabetic would no longer need daily shots, but only a shot every six months or so. That would be such a blessing.

Stem cell research is very close to several major breakthroughs that would--if not outright cure--make life much more bearable for those who have type 1 diabetes. We NEED government funded research--don't let the big drug companies' lobbyists win out--vote for stem cell research, encourage your congress person to support it.
Together, we can find a cure. Be part of the solution. Make a difference.

And I guess that's it for now.
Bright Blessings and look for the ARC contest to start soon.
